One Monte-Carlo
District of shops, residences and public spaces built on the site of Sporting d'Hiver, the first stone of which was laid on July 5, 2016.
The Sporting d’Hiver was one of the best-known buildings in Monte-Carlo - a village hall and performance venue built in the 1930s. Its replacement by the One Monte-Carlo program, supported by the Société des Bains de Mer, is the textbook case of Monegasque urban reconversion.
What this sheet provides
Its value lies in the gap between two documents. In October 2009, the debates of the National Council published in the Journal de Monaco indicate that demolition “is no longer envisaged for the immediate future”. In July 2016, the first stone was laid. Between the two, a decision was made — and this sheet preserves its limits, without filling the gap.
This is precisely what an archive allows us to see and what a promotional press release erases: a project announced as abandoned, then carried out seven years later.
What Memoria doesn’t pretend to know
The exact date of the demolition of Sporting d’Hiver was not found in the official sources consulted. The file therefore does not publish it. The fact that a building has disappeared does not exempt it from dating it - and the chronology of this sheet includes an assumed interval between the 2009 debate and the first stone of 2016.
The facts are paraphrased; only the source is cited. A correction, a missing date? Write to Memoria.
