The Rainier III Nautical Stadium was inaugurated on August 19, 1961 by Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace. A marble plaque is affixed to the diving board - the Journal de Monaco publishes the report, which makes this date an official fact and not an approximate commemoration.

Equipment from the 1960s

The building belongs to a decade when Monaco transformed its seaside into public facilities: the nautical stadium was set up on the Quai Albert I, facing the port. Its name honors the reigning Prince, as for the Stade Louis II twenty-four years later in Fontvieille - a constant Monegasque practice, which this archive allows us to see repeated.

Why we archive it

Public sports facilities are rarely documented for themselves: we know the competitions held there, not the date on which the pool was opened. The 1961 plate and the issue of the Journal which reports it are enough to fill this void.
