Théâtre du Fort Antoine
Open-air amphitheatre in the former fortress at the north-east tip of the Rock — rebuilt in 1953, used as a summer theatre since 1970.
The Théâtre du Fort Antoine is an open-air amphitheatre at the north-east tip of the Rock, on avenue de la Quarantaine. The building is an 18th-century fortress (Prince Antoine I), rebuilt in 1953 by Prince Rainier III, then converted into a summer stage in 1970.
From barracks to cultural programming
The fort keeps a military aesthetic — watchtower, pyramid of cannonballs, borders of pittosporum — while hosting theatre, music and poetry in summer. The Department of Cultural Affairs programmes it; the official site theatrefortantoine.com centralises ticketing and seasons.
In 2020, the theatre’s fiftieth anniversary was celebrated in the Journal de Monaco and through a government programme (« Les Invités du Fort Antoine », theatre season in August and September).
Why we archive it
Fort Antoine is both a rampart and a cultural facility: two successive lives, datable (1953, 1970), that tourist guides sum up in one sentence. Memoria keeps these markers so as not to confuse the historic fortress with the contemporary theatre season.
Each archive on this record is dated and tied to a public source. The facts are paraphrased; only titles, media, dates and links to publishers are reproduced. A document, a photograph, a correction? Write to Memoria.
