Place du Casino
Esplanade du Carré d'Or — pedestrian heart between the Casino, the Café de Paris, the Hôtel de Paris and One Monte-Carlo, redeveloped and inaugurated on June 2, 2020.
The Place du Casino is the central esplanade of the Carré d’Or: it connects the Casino de Monte-Carlo, the Café de Paris, the Hôtel de Paris, the Hermitage, the Jardins des Boulingrins and the One Monte-Carlo complex. It is both a pedestrian public square and the scene of the major summer events of the Société des Bains de Mer.
2020: a place “restored to glory”
After several months of work, the SBM inaugurated the new design of the square on June 2, 2020 — at the same time as the post-containment reopening of the Café de Paris brasserie and its terrace. The project places emphasis on pedestrian traffic, while maintaining the Grand Prix route and sometimes authorizing exceptional cars to stop there for the public.
A year earlier, the inauguration of One Monte-Carlo (February 2019) had already recomposed the facades and commercial access around the same esplanade.
Why we archive it
Place du Casino is not just a photographic backdrop: it is a development work restored on a specific date, at the crossroads of tourism, gaming and Monegasque town planning. Memoria separates this esplanade from the shops that surround it — while crossing their chronology when it restructures the place.
Each archive in this sheet is dated and linked to a public source. The facts are paraphrased; only titles, media, dates and links to publishers are included. A document, a photograph, a correction? Write to Memoria.
